Olivia Rodrigo Finally Reveals Hit Song 'Drivers License' Is Not About Sabrina Carpenter — She Doesn't Know Her 'At All'

Pump the brakes! Olivia Rodrigo denied writing her hit song "Drivers License" about Sabrina Carpenter and Joshua Bassett's relationship, despite much speculation that she specifically wrote the breakup tune with her alleged ex and his new girlfriend in mind.

"I actually don’t know her at all,” Rodrigo said of Carpenter during the Tuesday, March 2, episode of Radio.com Live!. "I think we’ve met once or twice in passing, but I’ve never had a conversation with her.”

When asked if the 18-year-old would write a rebuttal song to the Girl Meets World alum's alleged clap-back tune, "Skin," Rodrigo said none of her music was about Carpenter, 21, or Bassett, 20. "I don’t think I could write a song that was meaningful or emotional about somebody that I don’t know," Rodrigo stated. "I think artists should be able to write about whatever they want to write about."

The brunette beauty made headlines two months ago when she debuted her first solo, "Drivers License." The teenage-heartbreak anthem was instantly praised by the public and hit number one on Apple Music and iTunes charts as well as Spotify's US and Global charts — she even caught the attention of pop icon Taylor Swift.

Besides fans' love for Rodrigo's lyrics and tune, many were caught up in the drama surrounding the song, as fans speculated she wrote it about Bassett, her costar on Disney+’s High School Musical: The Musical – The Series whom she is rumored to have dated.

In Rodrigo's tune, she sang about how her ex was probably with "that blonde girl" who is "so much older than me" and "everything I'm insecure about," which fans thought described Carpenter. 

Bassett and Carpenter — who were first linked this past June — have since released their own respective songs, which fans thought included lyrics that slammed Rodrigo. However, Carpenter claimed her song "Skin" "isn't calling out a single person," in a January Instagram post.

Bassett released his song, “Only a Matter of Time,” on January 28 and revealed he wrote it over the summer, which is when his alleged feud with Rodrigo began.

Last month, the Stuck in the Middle alum said he hopes the drama surrounding costar Rodrigo won't hinder fans' support of his and girlfriend Carpenter's upcoming duet.

“I didn’t want my EP to be overshadowed by some other narrative that people were trying to make,” Bassett told Billboard. “I really want the focus to be on the art instead of some of the talk and the chatter. You shouldn’t live to please everybody, but at the same time, there are ways to be sensitive to situations where maybe [the duet] has a better chance at a different time.”
