Mary J. Blige 'Didn't Want To Live,' According To New Documentary Trailer — Watch

The trailer for Mary J. Blige's new documentary just dropped, and the singer appears to be getting seriously candid with the camera.

Mary J. Blige: My Life, which will hit Amazon Prime at the end of June, follows the R&B artist’s music career and the making of her 1994 record My Life.

In the beginning of the trailer, Blige opened by describing the role of music as a savior throughout the difficult times in her life, especially while growing up in the Bronx.

“The only thing, I think, that kept us guided was the music. It just saved you,” the 50-year old singer said in the trailer. “In the neighborhood we lived in, it’s like prison. There was a lot wrong, and it was a lot I needed to get out.”

As she reflects on the writing and recording of her influential album, she said, “My Life is probably my darkest album at one of the darkest times I’ve had.”

The Respect actress candidly shared, “Most of the time I was just depressed and didn’t want to live. I had it all inside, and I was able to sing it and write it, and I didn’t know that so many people felt the same way.”

Other major hip-hop and R&B stars also appear in the trailer, including Taraji P. Henson, who speaks on Blige’s influence, adding that “she made it okay for people to say it’s alright to be me."

Alicia Keys is also featured in the clip and talks about the rare talent Blige has, saying “we still don’t get to see that a lot.”

Sean “Diddy” Combs also chimes in during the teaser, adding that “nobody sounds like her.” Combs not only appears in the documentary, but he also was Blige’s co-executive producer for the film, with Quincy Jones as the executive music producer.
