Val Kilmer Uses Voice Box To Detail Slow Cancer Recovery In 'Val' Doc Trailer — See The Shocking Clip

Val Kilmer is opening up about his slow cancer recovery in a unique way.

In the trailer for the new documentary Val, the actor finds a way to tell his story despite his hindered speaking ability due to throat cancer.

The Top Gun actor was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2014 and went public with the diagnosis in 2017. He has since opened up about his experience and his tracheotomy procedure.

The feature documentary film, directed by Leo Scott and Ting Poo, will follow Kilmer’s life and career, including special home-movie footage that he has been shooting for years. It will also include footage from various film sets that offer cameos from Sean Penn and Kevin Bacon.

“I was the first guy I knew to own a video camera,” he says in the clip. “I have thousands of hours of video tapes and film reels that I’ve shot throughout my life and career.”

The film is also expected to give insight on Kilmer’s battle with cancer. “I’m still recovering and it is difficult to talk and to be understood,” the Batman actor says in the trailer. “But I want to tell my story more than ever.” He also speaks through a voice box at some points as well.

“I have behaved poorly,” he admits in the clip. “I have behaved bravely, bizarrely to some. I see myself as a sensitive, intelligent human being, but with the soul of a clown.”

The trailer ends with a cryptic line from Kilmer, where he says, “It’s a story about my life, that is also not my life.”

The documentary will hit theaters on July 23 and will be available on Amazon Prime Video on August 3. It is expected to premiere on Wednesday, July 7, at the Cannes Film Festival.
