The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City star Jen Shah and her March 2021 arrest for running an alleged telemarketing scheme are the focus of the new Hulu documentary The Housewife and the Shah Shocker.
Shah was charged with conspiracy to commit wire fraud and conspiracy to commit money laundering in connection to the alleged telemarketing ploy — to which she has pled not guilty. From the secrets of her lavish lifestyle to the details of the alleged scam — here are five bombshell revelations from the special.
The Alleged Telemarketing Scheme Has Been Under Investigation Since 2016
According to the special, the investigation began in 2016 after a narcotics arrest in New Jersey led Homeland Security Investigations' El Dorado Task Force and the New York Police Department to look into other telemarketing businesses nationwide. The investigation led them to indict multiple telemarketers in U.S. vs. Ketabchi in 2017, which resulted in a trial and more than 15 guilty pleas.
It also led prosecutors to the Bravo star. In November 2019, Shah and her assistant Stuart Smith were charged in the case of USA vs Cheedie. They were accused of participating in a nationwide telemarketing scheme along with eight other people.
Fashion Designer Koa Johnson Claims That Shah Threw A 'Chili Bowl' At Him During Their Infamous Leaked Fight
Koa Johnson claimed that during their infamous dispute (that was leaked to the public earlier this year) the reality star “threw a chili bowl” at him. Shah's personal designer claimed that the argument began after she was “upset” for not feeling ready to film the RHOSLC Season 1 reunion.
“Every scene, she’s screaming. And in real life, there are moments when she’s always screaming,” Johnson explained in the doc. “She’s actually worse off-screen.”

The creative described the months he worked for Shah as the "most traumatizing" of his life. Johnson said that he "wasn't sleeping" or "taking care of myself physically and mentally". He then added, “She did say in a couple of her interviews that she’s the Wizard of Oz. The woman behind the curtain. I don’t think she’s the wizard, I think she’s the Wicked Witch of the West.”
After Johnson gave his boss notice that he was leaving, he packed up and bought a "one way" ticket home to Hawaii from Utah.
Shah Claimed That She Was Spending $50,000 A Month Prior To Her Arrest Despite Cars & Jewels Reportedly Being Rented
In her audition tape for the hit series, the mother-of-two claimed that she was living a very expensive lifestyle. “We live in a gated community… I probably spend at least 50 grand a month,” Shah said. “There are like 20 pieces of luggage when we travel and like maybe 17 of them are mine.”
According to the special, the lavish home, luxury cars and coveted jewelry that she flaunted on the show were not purchased by Shah but rented.
Shah Previously Worked For A Telemarketing Sales Company With A Problematic Past
According to Shah's previous LinkedIn profile (which has now been removed), she was listed as the director of business development for a company called Prosper Inc.
According to the documentary, Prosper Inc, was a telemarketing company that had previously settled a lawsuit with a former employee who claimed that they were waterboarded as part of a motivating exercise.
