Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova in Black Widow
Florence Pugh was up for the challenge to play a super-fit Russian spy opposite Scarlett Johansson in Black Widow. “I loved all of that because I grew up with a lot of dance and a lot of movement. I was always fighting my brother,” shared the 25-year-old Brit. “So I find all of that combat stuff so exciting.”
Florence worked with trainer James Shields and did “kickboxing for two hours with this amazing guy called Troy,” she added, noting that the focus wasn’t on her appearance. “It was just about, ‘How strong can you be?’”
Angelina Jolie as Thena in Enternals
Angelina Jolie had a big goal in mind when bringing the warrior Thena to life in Eternals. “I tried to make her as graceful as I could,” shared the 46-year-old A-lister, who did lots of ballet leading up to filming. “I trained in ballet because I watched the other Marvel films, and everybody [has] just done such an amazing job. I wanted to try to bring something different to Thena,” she explained, “and I thought to make her as female and long and soft.”
Gemma Chan as Sersi in Eternals
According to Gemma Chan, it takes a lot of core strength to play a superhero on screen. That explains why the Eternals beauty (who also starred in 2019’s Captain Marvel) is such a big fan of yoga and Pilates. “I have a mini morning routine,” Chan, 39, has said. “It’s a blend of yoga, sun salutations and a little bit of Pilates core work. It only takes about 10 minutes, but I find that if I do that in the morning, it sets me up for the day ahead.”
